It’s 5 years this year since I graduated with a degree in Magazine Journalism. The next line is going to sound so cheesy but I always wanted to write. When I was 8 I asked for a typewriter for Christmas, at 9 I got hooked on Girl Talk and Sneak magazine and from here I moved onto Sugar, Bliss and J17.

During a  recent mass-tidy of my bedroom I discovered a couple of old issues of magazines, varying from when I was a lot younger and moving into my teens. I’ve always read magazines, waiting till Tuesday to get the next and I hope it’s a tradition that will always stick with me. However the industry has changed faces so many times in the past 10-15 years with blogs, just like mine, becoming content hubs for all things fashion, beauty, lifestyle and celebrity.

Towards the end of high school it became my weekly schedule to stop by the local paper shop to pick up Heat magazine. I loved it for so many years and it was this weekly ritual that set me onto the path of studying journalism at university. However since I received my diploma and those little BA letters, the magazine industry and my desire to join this fast-paced yet declining world has changed dramatically.

I set this little blog up 5 years ago and since then the blogger community has soared. Packed with talented girls and guys who know their way around a DSLR (I had to Google that to make sure I had it spelt correctly!), understanding basic SEO and what makes great content.

Those magazines I grew up reading cover to cover have since disapeared from the shelves and digital is where it’s at. When I graduated I didn’t know where to turn.Living in the North West, Wigan to be exact, it’s not exactly the hub of high fashion. But I’ve made my way in E-Commerce and work as a copywriter, which I absolutely love. And, in turn I’ve discovered so much about online and how to make content translate from page to screen.

Blogs are a fantastic source of style, recipes, beauty reviews, advice and laugh out loud stories that make you laugh, cry and sometimes, if the blogger is reallly good, a bit of both. My stack of magazines is diminishing and my time spent reading online is on the increase.

Sure, I still make the weekly trip to that same paper shop to buy New and Now as my guilty pleasure. A girl’s gotta read about TOWIE stars, The Kardashians and check out the seriously on point style section in Now. I also have a subscription to Glamour and Cosmo get it right with their plus size collumn and interviews with my fave, Khloe Kardashian and the amazing Emma Willis.

But blogs provide you up to the minute content. Available on Insta, Twitter, BlogLoving and the bookmarked blogs I check daily too. My love for magazines is still there and I still dream of seeing my name in print, but having a blog is pretty cool too. I get to write posts like this, just as I did on my childhood typewriter and there it goes, onto the internet. Easy peasy.

It’s interesting to see how the print industry continues. I pray that magazines won’t die. Nothing beats opening the fresh pages of a new magazine and setting time aside to devour it, cover to cover. But right now blogging is at it’s peak and maybe this is just the beginning of a new era….

    I love reading magazines. I remember when I’d look forward to the Sabrina The Teenage Witch magazines fortnightly release. Now I don’t read magazines as much, blogs are just so much more accessible.

  2. This is such an interesting read. I just graduated with an English degree last summer and I’m hoping to do a postgrad in your subject, magazine journalism. So, you’re a few years ahead of me but this is incredibly relevant to me nonetheless. I completely agree with the main points you raised. Like you, I hope that magazines won’t die. It would be a great loss, I think. Thanks for sharing your experiences!

      No worries Christina, thanks for your lovely comment. Yep the industry is changing but it still so relevant with magazines and retailers working together to provide inspirational content, bloggers aren’t achieving just yet. Good luck with your post grad!x

    I don’t remember the last time I read a magazine, unless you count sewing ones, which I’ve been bought a few of over the past year or so. I have to admit, even those put me off a little as they’re just a big bundle of adverts and v. little content. I’d much rather read a blog post which has someone’s thoughts and ideas in it, and like you say is more up-to-the-minute.
